Product Climate Footprint

Have you noticed that the climate footprint information is available on some products? Wondering what it means and why it matters? Keep reading to learn more!

Product Climate Footprint: what is it?

The climate footprint of a product refers to its impact on climate change. It is assessed by measuring the greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, etc.) emitted throughout its lifecycle, from raw material extraction to disposal (cradle to grave), expressed in kilograms of CO2 equivalents (CO2e).

Understanding CO2e

CO2e is a standardised unit created by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to compare various greenhouse gases (GHG). Each of the greenhouse gases has a different “global warming potential” (their power to heat the atmosphere). For example, the IPCC estimates that 1 ton of methane has on average a global warming potential 28 times greater than 1 ton of CO2. This means that 1 ton of methane = 28 tons CO2e.

We standardise reading the Product Climate Footprint (PCF) by converting each greenhouse gas and its impact into kg equivalent of CO2. This is why you see an "e" after CO2, standing for "equivalent".

Why do we provide this information on products?

We aim to reduce the impact of our product portfolio and provide insight for you to help you estimate the potential impact based of your purchase.

The first step to GHG reduction is measuring. With our scale, we believe we have the power to encourage our suppliers worldwide to decrease their products’ climate footprint and join us in our aim to address climate change.

More products will display PCF as data collection progresses

Climate footprint (PCF) information is gradually expanding as we continue collecting data from more suppliers and products. Because this is still an emerging topic for many partners, it will take time before we can provide PCF values for the majority of our assortment.

However, for products where PCF data is already available, the information is displayed directly on the product detail page under the “Sustainable Selection” section.

Transparency

We understand it is important for you to have access to transparent information about the climate footprint of the products you purchase. Informed decisions can bring significant changes in consumption patterns, promoting sustainability throughout the whole supply chain in the long term.

How Lyreco manage Product Climate Footprint information

To ensure consistency and accuracy, we have established requirements and aligned with manufacturers or suppliers:

  1. Scope of assessment: the impact of the product throughout each stage of its life cycle, including raw material extraction, production, distribution, use, and disposal (cradle to grave)
  2. Methodology: Adhere to standards like Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), or relevant ISO standards.
  3. Functional unit: specifies the unit of measurement that the calculation is based on.

In general, you can distinguish different data accuracy although it uses the same methodology and scope. They are as follows:

  • Better data accuracy - Environmental Product Declaration / Product Environmental Footprint reports – are standardised, third-party verified documents that transparently present credible information about a product’s impact on the environment.
  • Estimated data accuracy:
  1. Third-party validated Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) result - this result is not as standardised as EDP or PEF, however, the adopted methodology shall align with EPD, PEF or relevant ISO standards.
  2. Estimated Global Warming Potential (GWP) result – this result is the most general product’s climate footprint data based on generic, sectors and cross-sector factors.

The information shared by Lyreco is provided by the manufacturer or supplier OR it is based on the Global Warming Potential (GWP) calculation conducted by 3rd party service provider.

Lyreco’s GWP-based data and reports follow ISO 14040/14044 for life cycle assessments and ISO 14067 for product carbon footprint calculations.

Can this data be used to compare different products?

Today, direct comparisons between products are not always possible because the market is still developing. Suppliers use different methodologies, data sources, and scopes when calculating climate footprints, which means the results are not yet fully aligned.

As the market matures and the use of common methods becomes more widespread, we expect greater consistency and comparability. Our approach supports this evolution by first building transparency and baselines, enabling more reliable product‑to‑product comparisons in the future.

More information

Product Climate Footprint is a developing field, with evolving methodologies. While we aim for standardisation, current variations exist among manufacturers.

At this moment, each manufacturer in the same category could choose a different methodology to conduct the product’s validated Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Therefore, the information we provide serves as a rough estimation and may not facilitate direct comparisons between products. It is not suitable to use to compare the impact of one to another product in the same category.

What is Environmental Product Declaration (EPD):

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised and verified document that provides transparent and comparable information about the environmental performance of a product or service throughout its lifecycle. It includes data on environmental impacts such as energy consumption, GHG emissions, water usage, and waste generation.

What is Product Environmental Footprint (PEF):

Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) is a methodology developed by the European Commission to assess and communicate the environmental performance of products throughout their life cycle. PEF aims to provide standardised and comparable information about the environmental impacts of products, helping consumers, businesses, and policymakers make informed decisions.

What is Global Warming Potential (GWP):

Global Warming Potential (GWP) is a measure of how much heat a greenhouse gas traps in the atmosphere over a specific period, relative to carbon dioxide (CO2), which has a GWP of 1. Greenhouse gases vary in their ability to trap heat, and GWP allows for comparisons of their warming effects.

Suppliers provide the information and or evidence, which may include reports or information/data directly from the supplier. The responsibility for data accuracy and consistency relies upon suppliers.

FAQ

What is Product Climate Footprint?

The climate footprint of a product refers to its impact on climate change.  It is assessed by measuring the greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, etc.) emitted throughout its lifecycle, from raw material extraction to disposal (cradle to grave), expressed in kilograms of CO2 equivalents (CO2e).

Why is understanding the climate footprint of products important?

We aim to reduce the impact of our product portfolio and provide insight for you to help you estimate the potential impact based of your purchase.

The first step to GHG reduction is measuring. With our scale, we believe we have the power to encourage our suppliers worldwide to decrease their products’ climate footprint and join us in our aim to address climate change.

How is the climate footprint of a product calculated?

To ensure consistency and accuracy, we have established requirements and aligned with manufacturers or suppliers:

  1. 1. Scope of assessment: the impact of the product throughout each stage of its life cycle, including raw material extraction, production, distribution, use, and disposal   (cradle to grave)
  2. 2. Methodology: Adhere to standards like Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), or relevant ISO standards.
  3. 3. Functional unit: specifies the unit of measurement that the calculation is based on.

In general, you can distinguish different data accuracy although it uses the same methodology and scope. They are as follows:

  • --> Better data accuracy - Environmental Product Declaration / Product Environmental Footprint reports – are standardised, third-party verified documents that transparently present credible information about a product’s impact on the environment.
  • --> Estimated data accuracy:

What standards are used to measure the climate footprint?

Standards such as ISO 14040/14044 for life cycle assessments and ISO 14067 used to measure and report carbon footprint of products.

Do you provide climate footprint information for all products?

As a reseller, we are actively engaging with our suppliers to obtain information on the climate footprint of their products. However, since this is a evolving topic for many of our suppliers, we anticipate that it will take a few years before we can provide climate footprint information for the majority of the products we offer.

Can I use the climate footprint data to compare different products?

In general, a comparison is only possible when the methodology and scope used to calculate the climate footprints are the same for both products. If the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology or scope differs, the information cannot be used for direct comparisons of carbon emissions. Variations in these factors can lead to inaccurate comparisons within the same product category.

How often is the climate footprint data updated?

We update our climate footprint data whenever we receive updated information from our suppliers when there are significant changes in the production process, supply chain, or materials used.

Can we get a detailed report on the climate footprint of specific products?

Yes, we can provide detailed reports on the climate footprint of specific products. Please contact our customer support team to request this information.

Can the climate footprint information help us achieve our sustainability targets?

We aim to reduce the impact of our product portfolio and provide insights to help you estimate the potential impact of your purchases. This is an initial step to encourage our suppliers to disclose their climate footprint data. In the future, we hope to support you further in understanding the potential impact of your purchases.
