To encourage coffee lovers to build a healthy routine, we have summarised the following key points in drinking coffee:
1. Avoid Drinking on an Empty Stomach
Everyone knows coffee is good at keeping us refreshed and focused. Many people would like to start the day with a cup of coffee, however, drinking coffee on an empty stomach might cause gastrointestinal irritation. To avoid affecting the secretion of gastric acid and hinder the absorption of nutrients, it is better to drink coffee an hour after breakfast.
2. Do Not Overdrink
Study shows that proper amount of coffee intake can help reduce the risk of having a stroke or suffering from dementia. Adults can consume no more than 300mg of caffeine per day (that is about 2 to 3 cups of coffee), while pregnant or breastfeeding women should not consume over 200mg each day. Excessive caffeine intake might lead to insomnia, heart palpitations or affect fetal development.
3. Choose Coffee Carefully
There are two main types of coffee beans in the market -- Robusta and Arabica, the two have different caffeine content where the caffeine content in the former bean is twice as that of the latter one. Other than the type of coffee bean, the brewing method is also important. Although coffee can help control diabetes, to achieve the effect of preventing type 2 diabetes, it is necessary to avoid adding high calories cream and syrup.
4. Store Properly
High temperature and humidity not only will affect the flavour and nutrients of coffee beans, but might also cause the coffee beans to produce ochratoxin A, which will affect the liver and kidney! Therefore, it is recommended to purchase coffee beans with vacuum-sealed package and store it in dry and cool environment after opened, so as to preserve the best nutrients of the coffee.
