Sustainable selection by Lyreco
In 2023, Lyreco is launching the first version of “Sustainable Selection” by Lyreco which is a new progressive assessment methodology, clearer and closer to our long-term sustainability strategy aiming at strengthening the current procurement process at Lyreco with more sustainable initiatives, actions and decisions.
The Lyreco sustainable procurement process is following the ISO 204001 principles validated by SGS2.
“Sustainable Selection” by Lyreco will be continuously improved in order to meet the ever-changing needs and requirements and increase our maturity level of sustainability.
This new assessment methodology is carried out in 2 successive steps among which 3 mandatory criteria are required from our suppliers and products to pass the overall assessment:
1st step – Supplier Assessment
This supplier assessment is the 1st mandatory criteria defined by Lyreco which is based on the Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standard and is considered completed if:
• The supplier possesses a valid third-party ESG certification (B-Corp or Ecovadis certification); OR

• The supplier provides evidencing information and documentation about ESG initiatives and actions under a self-assessment questionnaire and achieves The minimum scoring3 defined by Lyreco.
2nd step - Product Assessment *
(*provided that the assessment from the supplier we source the products concerned is satisfactory completed)

The product assessment is considered completed if the 2 mandatory criteria defined by Lyreco are met :
• A minimum 80% of the product packaging is made of recyclable material; AND

• A minimum 80% of the product material is made of recyclable material or the product can be reused or refurbished.
If the above 3 mandatory criteria are met, then the products will be further assessed and assigned up to 3 of the following “Sustainable Selection” icons :
Products focusing on environmental contribution (“Planet” selection); AND/OR
Products contributing to the well-being and safety of people at work (“People at Work” selection); AND/OR
Products contributing to improving societal impact on local communities (“Community” selection).

Planet selection

Products bearing the selection “Planet” are selected because of their focus on the environmental contribution. A Planet-selection product is required to (i) have a major Type 1 environmental certification recognized globally, AND/OR (ii) be refurbished, AND/OR (iii) have a minimum percentage of recycled materials in their composition, AND/OR (iv) have minimum of 2 environmental features, such as being refillable or reusable, compostable or biodegradable, returnable, or having an extended life span.
Our guidelines follow ISO 14021 requirements – a highly reliable global standard.

FAQ
1) Difference between “Green Tree” vs ”Sustainable Selection”:
Sustainable trends/requirements have been evolving rapidly over the past years from the product itself to the product packaging and product’s end-of-life impact. At Lyreco, we want to make it easier for you to identify the products bearing a “Sustainable Selection” icon. That is why we are now transiting Lyreco “Green Tree” to Lyreco “Sustainable Selection” with wider requirements.
Lyreco “Green Tree” is focused on products with environmental contribution. While Lyreco “Sustainable selection has wider requirements focusing on the ESG standard and containing 3 mandatory criteria:
• A valid ESG certification or a 20% minimum score3 on the ESG self-questionnaire per supplier; and
• 80% minimum of the product’s primary packaging weight is recyclable; and
• 80% minimum of the product’s material is either recyclable or product is reusable.
If the above 3 mandatory criteria are met, then the products will be further assessed and assigned up to 3 of the following “Sustainable Selection” icons:
• Products focusing on environmental contribution (“Planet” selection); AND/OR,
• • Products contributing to the well-being and safety of people at work (“People at Work” selection); AND/OR,
• Products contributing to improving societal impact on local communities (“Community” selection).
Lyreco “Green Tree” methodology relies on ISO 14020: Environmental labels and declaration. While Lyreco “Sustainable Selection” methodology relies on the ISO 20400: Sustainable Procurement Guidance.
2) Why is it a reliable method?
At Lyreco, we are committed to having the right processes in place to deliver against our sustainability commitments. The best way to do so is to work hand in hand with external partners who regularly monitor and guide our internal practices.
The Lyreco sustainable procurement process is following the ISO 204001 principles validated by SGS2. “Sustainable Selection” by Lyreco will be continuously improved in order to meet the ever-changing needs and requirements and increase our maturity level of sustainability.
Our methodology is designed to evolve and be refined. Our evaluation scale (minimum points, the scope of the requirement, etc.) is already demanding and will become more and more restrictive.

Disclaimer
The “Sustainable Selection” methodology is developed by Lyreco according to criteria established internally. The assessment is based on information and evidences provided by suppliers which can be, without this being restrictive, certifications, technical data sheets, testing reports, procedures, reporting, and/or declarations of conformability from suppliers.
