Employers are required to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities, and personnel to ensure their employees receive immediate attention if they are injured or taken ill at work…by law! This is in accordance with the Health and Safety (First-aid) Regulations 1981. These Regulations apply to all workplaces, including those with less than five employees and the self-employed.

Employers should provide a suitable first aid room(s) where the assessment of first-aid needs identifies this as necessary. Your first aid room should have:

• Have an examination/medical couch, a chair/stool, any necessary additional equipment (as listed) and have enough space for people to work
• Have washable surfaces and adequate heating, ventilation and lighting
• Be kept clean, tidy, accessible and available at all times when employees are at work
• Be positioned as near as possible to a point of access for transport to a hospital
• Have a store for first aid materials
• Have an accident book for recording incidents
