FSC and PEFC green certificates

What’s their link to sustainability and how do they differ from each other?

It’s more important than ever to consider how our actions impact the planet. Whether you’re buying office supplies, furniture, or hygiene products, you may notice small FSC and PEFC logos on the labels.

But do you know what they stand for and why they’re so vital?

Over 30 years ago, the European Union began exploring ways to reduce the environmental impact of ever-growing industry. In 1992, this pursuit of sustainable solutions led to the creation of the EU Ecolabel, an official globally recognised certification assessing the environmental impact of manufacturing and a product’s entire lifecycle.

Since 2009, Lyreco has adhered to EU Ecolabel certification, reflecting a voluntary commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices in its own production.

PEFC – the most widespread certificate guaranteeing sustainable forestry

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is a global umbrella organisation for national certification schemes that are developed with the participation of all stakeholders.

Its core mission is to promote sustainable forest management respecting local traditions and conditions. PEFC works to combat illegal logging and over-deforestation, ensuring that forests remain resources for future generations.

Unlike FSC, PEFC places an emphasis on the diversity between countries and regions, making certification easier for smaller forest owners who may have difficulty with the more stringent FSC requirements.

FSC – a rigorous forest-friendly system

The Forest Stewardship Council is considered to be the first globally operational forest certification system. Its main mission is to promote environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of forests around the world, in particular through the enforcement of strict environmental and social constraints on forestry.

The key difference between FSC and PEFC is that while FSC adopts a centralised, top-down approach, PEFC recognises and supports existing national and regional standards. These are then assessed and approved at international level.

FSE certification is difficult because candidates have to meet stringent standards. Lyreco became a member of FSC international back in 2018.

Sustainable Selection by Lyreco

Lyreco offers a unique range of sustainable products that meet strict sustainability criteria. Every product passes a thorough two-step evaluation – first of the supplier, then of the product itself. This careful selection process ensures that customers can trust the quality and environmental impact of their purchases.

The products fall into three categories: Planet, People, and Community, each representing a different aspect of sustainability:

  • Planet: Environmentally friendly products that reduce the ecological footprint.

  • People: Products that promote well-being, health, and safety in the workplace.

  • Community: Products that help to make a positive social impact and support local communities.
