Detva is a city in central Slovakia, near Zvolen, known for its tradition, folklore, and strong community. Therefore, the safety of both residents and visitors is among its priorities. That's why it placed an AED device on the fire station building – in an easily accessible location, where it can be used immediately in an emergency.
When first aid becomes a priority
The city's decision to equip public spaces with an AED device stemmed from the need to increase safety and preparedness for critical situations.
In sudden cardiac arrest, seconds are decisive. Without help, brain damage can occur after just 4–6 minutes, with each minute without intervention reducing the chance of survival by approximately 7–10%. That's why the availability of an AED device in public spaces or at the workplace is today one of the most effective ways to increase the chances of saving a life.
Solution: accessible AED for the public
The city of Detva opted for an automated external defibrillator supplied by Lyreco, which is designed to be used even by a layperson.

Just half a year after installation, the AED in Detva has already been used repeatedly. In one of the cases, it was deployed during the sudden collapse of an elderly woman in a public place. Thanks to the quick response of those present and the availability of the AED, it was possible to intervene before the arrival of the emergency services and restore vital functions.
