How to put together a workplace first aid kit and what to keep in mind

A first aid kit is a must-have for any safe workplace. While there’s no strict list of what it should include, there are a few important guidelines you’ll want to follow. So, what should your first aid kit contain, and what should you be looking out for?

If you were to try and find what a workplace first aid kit needs to include by law, you’ll quickly discover that this is not covered by domestic legislation. It’s up to each employer to decide how to stock their company’s first aid kit. But it’s crucial to remember that all employers have a responsibility to foster working conditions that let employees get on with their jobs without putting their health at risk.

The contents of your first aid kit should reflect the type of work being done, the number of staff, and, of course, the potential risks involved. It’s always a good idea to consult a safety officer or a doctor.

Choose your first aid kit

Every first aid kit should have the basic medical supplies you’ll need for minor injuries, scrapes, or health issues.

If you’re working outdoors or on a construction site, you’ll need quite a different selection of items compared to an office, where there’s no danger of a tree toppling over or a close encounter with a chainsaw. Your office co-workers are sure to appreciate painkillers, cooling gel, and eye drops.

In places where there’s a risk of harmful substances getting in people’s eyes – like laboratories, the chemical industry, or workshops – an eyewash should also be part of the first aid kit. This is essential for quickly and effectively flushing the eyes if any hazardous substances like chemicals, dust, or other debris get into them.

Your first aid kit should include these basic items:

  • bandages and plasters
  • disinfectants
  • disposable gloves
  • protective masks
  • sterile eyewash
  • antihistamines
  • burn gel
  • triangular bandage

Every first aid kit should also have a list of the items inside and straightforward instructions on how to use them. You should have emergency phone numbers and basic first aid guidelines nearby.

Where to put your first aid kit?

A workplace first aid kit should be located in a strategic and easily accessible spot so it can be found and used quickly in an emergency. It must be clearly marked with the right signage – a white cross on a green background. If it’s tucked away in a cupboard or drawer, make sure those are labelled too. All employees should know where the first aid kit is so that they can grab it without a moment’s hesitation if needed.

It is important to check the first aid kit regularly to top up any used items and replace any expired medications or supplies.

And remember, if inspectors pay your workplace a visit, they’re sure to be interested where you keep your first aid kit. And the chances are they’ll check the expiry dates – keep a close eye on those, and swap out any old products for new ones right away. This way, you can dodge any hassles or fines.
