How to improve safety culture
Open communication and training are essential
Workplace safety shouldn’t just be about ticking boxes or meeting legal requirements. At successful companies, safety is an integral part of the corporate culture. So how do you turn safety from an administrative chore into a natural part of your everyday work processes?
As an employer or company, there are multiple ways for you to maintain workplace safety. The key lies not only in providing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), but also in ensuring that it is used correctly and integrated into the overall safety system. The first step, of course, is to conduct a workplace risk analysis so that you can determine exactly what types of PPE are needed.
Don’t lose sight of the fact that safety is an ongoing process, not a one-off project. Regular risk assessments and employee training are essential if you are to foster a safety culture systematically.

Have open conversations with staff
The most effective way to ensure that safety rules are followed is to help employees to understand their importance. Staff need to understand why personal protection equipment is important and how to use it correctly. Don’t forget to provide regular training on the proper use, maintenance, and inspection of PPE.
You can’t build an effective safety culture without engaging in open dialogue. Get employees involved in discussions about safety and seek their feedback on the use of PPE. Collaborative dialogue can help to identify any shortcomings and make them more willing to use PPE.
A true safety culture goes beyond compliance. It actively involves employees in creating a safe working environment.

Take care when choosing PPE
Look for certified protective work equipment that meets legal requirements and standards. PPE should be tailored to specific risks and employee needs – for example, puncture-resistant safety shoes, helmets that protect against falling objects, and respirators to protect from dust.
Make sure the protective equipment fits employees well and doesn’t interfere with their work. You can significantly increase the effectiveness of PPE by taking proper measurements and selecting the right size.
PPE wears out over time. Periodically inspect it and replace damaged items immediately.
